Almost every level takes place in a soulless monument to Nazi power, much like real life Nazi architecture. Wolfenstein The New Order doesn’t forget this. It’s cool to watch a movie and see Nazis being slaughtered like cowards who pose no threat to the allies, but it should never be forgotten that the Nazis were able to invade Europe, start WWII, genocide and create a war machine through their abhorrent crimes, effective propaganda, deception and sheer force against the German people. On its own, the storytelling is bold, but considering we don’t really get this type of mature commentary often in games, it makes it feel so much more special.įinally, the portrayal of the Nazis is what I believe we’re missing in WWII fiction today, not only in games but across all literature. I’d go as far to say it’s almost feminist in its themes. ![]() From this story alone, The New Order explores themes of women’s roles in war, pregnancy and abortion, complacency, and the toll of violence on the mind, with seriousness. She brutally murders many of them, and seduces one to his death, which results in an unwanted pregnancy. Anya tells a story of a young woman who fought back against low-level Nazis in Poland. One of The New Order’s greatest strengths is that it tends to stay away from melodrama, which makes the story seem natural and grounded, even with Nazis in space and giant robots. Rather than a long, intimate cutscene, it’s just two people in love who have sex ordinarily. As funny as it is, it stood out to me as a rare video game sex scene without the usual melodrama that goes with it. Anya and BJ complement each other, which leads to comedic but also mature scenes of the two banging so intensely I’m surprised they didn’t level Berlin. She’s a capable and determined resistance fighter, and like BJ, has her own struggles and emotions. Anya Oliwa, BJ’s love interest, shows the war and heroism through a Polish non-combatant perspective. Sure, it’s cool to see badass dudes doing badass things, but seeing a badass dude carrying his inner conflict and growing as a person while doing badass things, is way more badass.īJ isn’t the only hero though. He fails at times and shows behaviour like empathy, relief, and open-mindedness. I really like how he’s not the typical action game character. With all this complexity, BJ Blazkowicz is still a total badass and a hero. However, BJ carries a sense of depression throughout the story, like he’s already lost, and he’s making a futile final stand against the seemingly unstoppable Nazi regime. His attitude feels based around revenge for putting his loved ones and new friends in such a limbo-esque and ruthless world. BJ doesn’t seem to take much pleasure in killing Nazis. He’s reduced to a wheelchair bound patient, forced to watch as the world is quickly dominated by the Nazi war machine. We see him lose his friends, and the war, in the first mission. I’m not being facetious when I say that a game which has you play as a 6’4” jacked American with a chiselled jawline gunning down legions of Nazis has some of the most adult storytelling I’ve seen in a video game.īJ Blazkowicz is a complex character, despite his appearance and awesome gravelly-voiced one-liners.
